Liverpool LFC & Other Sports
Amongst a vast range of top-class sport available in Liverpool, the city is home to two of England’s biggest football clubs, Liverpool LFC, who play in red, and Everton EFC, who play in blue. Their combined success has made Liverpool the most successful football city in England.
The Liverpool LFC anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was recorded in the sixties by a local group, Gerry and the Pacemakers. The two clubs are great city rivals and their grounds – Anfield and Goodison Park - are just a mile apart.
Between them, they have amassed 27 League championships, five European Cups, three UEFA Cups, one Cup Winners Cup, 11 FA Cups, and six League Cups.
Liverpool is also home to the world’s most famous horse race, the Grand National, which is run at Aintree every spring. It was first held in 1839 and is more popular today than ever. Haydock Racecourse is also a major venue for horse racing throughout the year.
The region is also known as the English Golf Coast, home to one of the finest stretches of championship golf anywhere. The Open Golf Championship, the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament in the world, is regularly staged at the links courses of Royal Liverpool in Hoylake – Rory McIlroy won there in 2014 - and Royal Birkdale in Southport, which will be hosting the event in 2017. For those with an appreciation of the game’s history, Wallasey Golf Club on the Wirral is where the Stableford format of scoring was invented back in the thirties.
Liverpool is also close to a number of top rugby teams, including St Helens (the Saints) who are the most successful Rugby League club of the Super League era.
Separately, the region has its fair share of excellent water sport centres, including the Liverpool Watersports Centre and Wirral Sailing Centre which each year hosts the British Open Dinghy Team Racing Championship, The Wilson Trophy.
Meanwhile, the Liverpool Echo Arena, hosts large-scale sporting events such as Davis Cup Tennis, Premier League Darts, Boxing and Gymnastics. In 2008, it staged the BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
