Beatles tours & the history of the Beatles in Liverpool
All of the Beatles were born during WW2 in the 1940’s. At that time, a staggering 60% of the UK’s imports were arriving through the Port of Liverpool. Vinyl records and music influences were also imported into Liverpool by ships’ crew from across the globe. Jazz, Blues, Caribbean and Country & Western Music were arriving in all their different forms aboard ships coming in and out of the docks.
John Lennon was a young boy who only lived with his mother Julia for a few short years in a house near Penny Lane. But at the age of five he went to live with his stricter, more traditional, Aunt Mimi who had great expectations for John’s career sending him to the Quarry Bank School. She was proud of his attendance at local Sunday School & that he sang in the Choir at St Peters Church. If you are a big fan of John Lennon, you cannot miss our bespoke Beatles tours in Liverpool as we will take you to see his school and church. There will be lots of photo opportunities along the way including Penny Lane.
It’s no surprise that as a child John had dreams of being like his idol Elvis Presley. He was a natural leader. Headstrong, he was not afraid to rock the boat. Sometimes coming across as arrogant; his vanity stopped him wearing his glasses most of the time despite being extremely short sighted.
During his youth, it was difficult to obtain musical instruments. A craze emerged with homemade instruments creating “skiffle” music. John Lennon joined in with several of his school friends forming his own skiffle band called the “Quarrymen”.
By the 1950s John was a teenager in a city with few jobs outside of the maritime industry. His Aunt famously said to him “John, Music is all well and good but you will never make a living out of it”. John Lennon pursued his dreams, he was introduced to Paul McCartney and neither of them could possibly have imagined the legacy they would leave behind. Fifty years Liverpool has re-emerged and reinvented itself becoming the UK’s fifth most visited city and the most vibrant city outside of London.
