Beatles tours & the history of the Beatles in Liverpool

All of the Beatles as we know them were born during WW2 in the 1940’s and at that time with around 60% of the UK’s supplies arriving through the Port of Liverpool, it’s not surprising that records in particular Jazz and Blues & in Liverpool also Country & Western Music were brought back by family working on board the many ships arriving on the River Mersey.

John Lennon was a young boy who had been taken away from his birth mother Julia at the age of five and then brought up by a stricter more traditional Aunt Mimi who had great expectations for John’s career sending him to the Quarry Bank School and to the local Sunday School & to sing in the Choir at St Peters Church.

There’s nothing much different to John’s dreams of being like his idol Elvis Presley , except that he was a natural leader, he was headstrong, sometimes called arrogant and vain as despite being extremely short sighted he would not wear his glasses.

It was difficult to obtain musical instruments so a craze emerged with homemade instruments creating “skiffle” music & John Lennon joined in with several of his school friends forming his own band called the “Quarrymen”.

It was difficult in the 1950’s as a 17 year old boy, living in a city which was then dark, dank, with few jobs & a matriarchal Aunt Mimi insisting “John, Music is all well and good but you will never make a living out of it” yet with a few twists of fate, John Lennon pursued his dreams, he was introduced to Paul McCartney and neither of them could possibly have imagined the legacy that 50 years later the Beatles left Liverpool which has now remerged and reinvented itself becoming the UK’s fifth most visted city and the most vibrant city outside of London.
