Medieval Chester, Port Sunlight & Birkenhead Priory

This is a popular Brilliant Liverpool Tours fully guided day for a group or as a private tour. You can book transport from us or we can guide this tour for you using your own motor coach or MPV.

The day starts with a guided visit to the beautiful village of Port Sunlight on the Wirral. We will travel through the 1934 Art Deco Birkenhead Tunnel and drive through perhaps the finest example of a Regency Square and Birkenhead Town Hall and pass Cammell Laird Shipyard whose claim to fame is to have built the Ark Royal as well as the CSS Alabama for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. This guided tour is a also great idea for a group of friends wanting a cruise excursion.

Roman Amphitheatre, Norman Cathedral and perhaps the UK’s best-kept secret!

Port Sunlight

Port Sunlight was built by William Hesketh Lever as an idyllic model village for his “Sunlight Soap” workers. At a time when the majority of workers had been living in terrible conditions without running water, heating or even a bathroom to move to such a village was the envy of many a family lucky enough to work at the soap factory. Lever used around 27 different architects to design clusters of houses using different European styles to reflect the countries he was trading with.

Your Tour Guide will show you open spaces, theatres, bowling greens, shops and there is even the church where Lord Lever and his wife are interred in a splendid crypt. This is a real hidden gem and your guests will love it.

You will have free time to explore the village and we recommend a visit to the Lady Lever Art Gallery which contains a collection of Wedgewood as well as important works pre-Raphaelite art and other artefacts from Roman excavations. There is also a fascinating collection of traditional English Furniture crafted by Thomas Chippendale and other famous designers.

There is a restaurant in the Lady Lever Art Gallery and there are other quaint tea shops as well as the café in the museum itself where you can buy refreshments. There is also the option to book a visit the Port Sunlight Museum at checkout.

Medieval Walled City of Chester

You will then rejoin your coach and your tour guide for a short drive to the Medieval City of Chester where you will enjoy a guided coach tour through the walls and across narrow bridges alongside the River Dee and the racecourse.

You will then enjoy a guided walking tour starting and finishing at the Town Cross where the Town Crier entertains the visitors every hour. You’ll walk a section of the walls which are intact around Chester and you will be able to see the most photographed clock outside of London. Passing the Cathedral with its Romanesque arches and the Town Hall and the black and white timber clad buildings you will fall in love with the unique charm of Chester.

After the walking tour, you will have free time to maybe visit the Cathedral or even take the Cathedral Tower Tour (where there is a small entrance charge) with the best views across Chester to North Wales.

Birkenhead Priory

Finally we make our way for a short visit to Birkenhead Priory the oldest standing building on Merseyside, Birkenhead Priory encapsulates so much of the town's history within a small, enclosed site. Founded in 1150, the monks of this Benedictine monastery looked after travellers for nearly 400 years and supervised the first regulated 'Ferry 'cross the Mersey'. Birkenhead Priory has received a Rics NorthWest Building Conservation Award. Touch the ancient sandstone walls, then look up at the towering cranes of the old Cammell Laird shipyard next door.

Breathtaking views of Liverpool waterfront await those fit enough to take the challenge to climb over 100 steps of the tower of St Mary's, the first parish church of the town. St Mary's shares the site which is now dedicated as a memorial to those lost in the 1939 disaster aboard the Laird's built submarine Thetis. The chapter house is consecrated as an Anglican church and there is a chapel dedicated to the training ship HMS Conway. A small museum tells the story of the site and the buildings as you see them today.
